Fresh, Local & Seasonal: Your Guide to Eating the Best of the Season
Eating locally and seasonally isn’t just a lifestyle—it’s a celebration of fresh flavors, nutrient-rich foods, and thriving communities. Right now, so many of my favorite produce items are in season, and I can’t get enough of crisp cucumbers (perfect for a refreshing salad!), juicy watermelon, colorful peppers and carrots, sweet corn, green beans, and tender peas. Seasonal eating ensures you’re enjoying fruits and vegetables at their peak—flavorful, nutrient-dense, and better for your health.
When choosing what to buy organic or conventional, the Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 lists are a great guide:
Dirty Dozen (best organic): 🍓 Strawberries, 🍎 Apples, 🍊 Nectarines, 🍐 Pears, 🍌 Grapes, 🍒 Cherries, 🥬 Spinach, 🥦 Kale & collards, 🥕 Carrots, 🍅 Tomatoes, 🌶️ Bell peppers, 🥒 Cucumbers. Organic here means fewer pesticides and no GMOs.
Clean 15 (conventional is usually fine): 🥑 Avocados, 🍍 Pineapple, 🥭 Mangoes, 🥥 Coconut, 🍋 Lemons & limes, 🍉 Watermelon, 🍌 Bananas, 🌽 Sweet corn, 🫘 Peas, 🥔 Sweet potatoes, 🍈 Honeydew/cantaloupe, 🫑 Onions, 🥬 Cabbage, 🥭 Papaya.
Visiting farmers markets is one of my favorite ways to get fresh, seasonal produce while supporting local growers. Around the Greater Houston area, there are many markets to explore—take your pick! And down in Corpus Christi, Grow Local Farmers Market, founded by the amazing Aislynn Campbell of Freedom Harvest Farms, is a downtown waterfront market in the courtyard of the Art Center. Aislynn is constantly teaching, hosting workshops, and offering farm-to-table meals in her homestead kitchen. Every community needs someone like her, dedicated to connecting people to their food and fostering local connections.
Shopping local not only ensures peak flavor and nutrition, it strengthens community ties and supports small farms—making your food choices meaningful. Whether you’re whipping up a crisp cucumber salad, enjoying sweet watermelon, or sautéing fresh green beans, seasonal and local eating is all about celebrating the abundance of the harvest and nourishing your body with the best nature has to offer.
